Why Fitment Quality Matters More Than Price in Cab Selection
Price is usually the first thing people compare when choosing a cab. It is easy to understand why. The number sits clearly on the quote, making it simple to compare one supplier against another. The problem is that the purchase price only tells part of the story.
The real tests start after installation.
A cab can arrive looking perfectly acceptable, only for problems to appear weeks or months later. A door that never seals properly, a persistent draught around the operator, water finding its way through a corner seal during heavy rain, and a vibration that develops over time because the mounting points were never quite right. None of these issues are dramatic on day one. Most do not stop the vehicle from working. But they affect operator comfort, increase maintenance demands, and shorten the lifespan of the cab itself.

That includes the shape and dimensions of the steel frame, how the panels meet the overhead guard, where the mounting points fall, how the door apertures align with the operator’s typical entry and exit route, and how tightly the PVC screens or steel panels seal against wind, rain, and cold.
A properly fitted cab starts with a model-specific design or a direct scan of the vehicle. It is built around the exact dimensions and mounting points of that machine, not a close approximation. Everything else follows from that foundation.
A cab that was designed generically, or adapted loosely from a different model, carries compromises through every stage of its working life. The operator feels those compromises first.
Why Fitment Quality Matters in Industrial Environments
Think about the conditions your operators are actually working in. Outdoor yards in February. Cold stores running at minus 18. Logistics sites where forklifts are in continuous operation for eight to twelve hours. Port environments where wind and rain come at the cab from every angle.
In those conditions, a poor fit is not a minor inconvenience. Gaps in seals let cold air in, poorly aligned doors allow water ingress, and incorrect mounting points create vibration that increases wear and maintenance over time.
The consequences go beyond comfort. A loose fitting cab can create visibility issues, increase vibration, and compromise door performance in poor weather. Operator comfort and operator safety are closely linked. When one suffers, the other often does too.
Long term performance depends on getting the design right before a single panel is fabricated. That is not recoverable after the fact.

A lower priced cab from a generic catalogue might fit acceptably in normal conditions on a common model. But the margin for error narrows quickly when you move to less standard specifications, unusual overhead guard configurations, or vehicles that require a bespoke approach.
What happens when a cab does not fit well and you have chosen a supplier based on price alone? You absorb the cost of a return and a remake, if the supplier offers it. You lose the installation window. The operator continues working in an unprotected or inadequately protected vehicle while a solution is sourced. Your maintenance team picks up additional work dealing with the consequences of a poor fit over the months that follow.
Multiply those costs across a fleet of 10, 20, or 50 vehicles and the initial saving disappears quickly.

A cab built to proper fitment standards starts from a confirmed design for that specific model. A manufacturer with a deep design library can confirm whether your vehicle is already in their system. For common forklift brands like Crown, Linde, Toyota, or Mitsubishi, most reputable UK cab manufacturers will have existing templates. For less common models, or entirely new vehicles without an existing template, the process requires a physical scan of the vehicle and a purpose-built CAD design.
Good installation quality means the cab arrives with all the fixings it needs, mounts to the vehicle without modification, doors and windows open and close cleanly, and the seals provide full weather protection from day one. It means the engineer who does the fitting is working from a product that was designed to go on that machine, not adapting around a close-enough approximation.
Operators notice the difference. A cab that fits properly is quieter at speed. Draughts are eliminated at the door and window seals. Heating, where fitted, is not fighting a constant air leak around a panel that never quite sat flush.
